Chelyabinsk meteor airburst injures approximately 1,500; no extinction event
A ~20-meter near-Earth object entered the atmosphere over Russia, producing an airburst that shattered windows across the region. Injuries were primarily from broken glass.
The event was unrelated to the same-day close approach of asteroid 2012 DA14. It is the largest recorded natural object entry since the 1908 Tunguska event and prompted expanded near-Earth object monitoring programs.
